Victorian corset

Viens no daudzajiem apģērba gabaliem, bez kura pieklājīga Viktoriāņu dāma neizietu no mājas bija korsete – tā laika modes silueta pats pamats, uz kura balstījās viss pārējais.

One of the garments (among many) that a proper Victorian lady wouldn’t be leaving the house was a corset. Corsets were a key garments to create a fashionable figure of that time. Just like fashion figures and dress shapes also corsets changed and developed during the Victorian era – they had various closures, construction techniques, shapes and materials. Other than providing the fashionable shape they were also a support garment – both for body and clothes. Victorian women had to carry a lot of layers of clothes around on daily basis. Honestly after creating and wearing the late bustle dress of 1880’s as it would have been back then I can’t imagine how I could wear it and carry around all that without a corset! Corsets truly do help to keep the shape but also support the body and carry the weight. I guess the best way to know and understand corsets is to wear them, just like it would be with any other garment.
